One of the world's rarest butterflies
The Brenton Blue (Orachrysops niobe) is found in just one place on Earth — a small reserve at Brenton-on-Sea, near Knysna on the Garden Route. Once thought lost to coastal development, it was rediscovered and saved by a public campaign that created the reserve protecting it today.
Its survival depends on a delicate web of fynbos, ants and a single host plant — a reminder of how fragile, and how worth protecting, our wild places are.
Why it matters
These stories are written to spark curiosity and care, teaching children about the creatures on their doorstep — so that reading these stories becomes a small act of protecting the creatures inside them.

Made on the Garden Route, for the wild.
Brenton Blue Books began with a simple belief: that children's books can inspire the youth, to teach and help them learn more about their environment and its special creatures.
Written and illustrated by Lynn Le Roux on South Africa's Garden Route, each title is a love letter to a real, endangered local creature — made to be read aloud, pored over, and coloured in.
The mission
To put a wild South African creature into the hands and hearts of every young reader — and to turn that wonder into care for the natural world.
The maker
Author and illustrator Lynn Le Roux writes and paints every book by hand, drawing on the fynbos, coastline and creatures of the Garden Route.
Why endangered creatures
Because the rarest among us have the most to teach — and because a child who loves the Brenton Blue may grow up to protect it.
Pick a creature to champion.
Five real stories worth saving — and a creature to fall in love with in each.
